五、另一则异事/译事：鸠摩罗什的舌头

易言之，“译者”又成了“易者”，不但是“易‘文’改装”，让原文穿上另一套语文的外衣，行走于另一个时空与文化，也促成了异语言与异文化之间的交“易”，而这些都是因为透过译者的关键性角色才能带着原文跨越语文的藩篱，变得容“易”、平“易”近人（accessible）。当然，在此变易中，因其可译与不可译，可变与不可变，原文的形影依稀可辨。而作为代表者/再现者的译者，就“言说者”的意义而言，顺理成章就成了原作者在另一个语文里的“喉舌”。

周朝对传译四方言语之人有不同的名称，而统称为“舌人”（马祖毅，1999:3）。《格理弗游记》第三部第九章，主角觐见拉格那格岛（Luggnagg）的国王时说，“我的舌头在朋友的口中”（“My Tongue is in the Mouth of my Friend”），意指“我请求带我的口译”（“I desired leave to bring my Interpreter”, Swift, 1986:198）。而在主角“有幸‘舔舐国王脚凳前的灰尘’”（“I might have the Honour to lick the Dust before his Footstool”, Swift, 1986:196）之前，得先一路舔舐宫廷的地板前行。若地板上沾有灰尘甚或毒粉，以致无法对话甚至吞入腹中，则有失宠、丧命之虞。进言之，尽管主角与国王透过口译相谈甚欢，却不能排除在此高压统治之国触怒国王的可能性，而他的性命就系于他所雇用的舌人身上，或者该说，“舌头上”。如此说来，翻译有时竟涉及生死大事。如果译者扮演诸种不同角色，又如何确定在关键时刻不致因为无能或疏忽，而使自己或他人遭受误解、不测甚至杀身之祸？或者因为有意而导致他人之厄运？

本文以笔者亲与的一则轶事/译事开始，此处则以历史上的另一则异事/译事结束。中国最伟大的佛经译师鸠摩罗什其实是外邦人，但他的译本却是“公认流传最广，最受欢迎的本子，就其普及层面而言，后世的译经大师都望尘莫及”（王文颜，1984：218）。根据梁朝慧皎《高僧传》的记载，鸠摩罗什本为印度人，成长于龟兹，自幼以梵文诵读经典，后秦姚兴弘始三年（公元401年）到中国长安，于逍遥园翻译佛教经论凡三百八十余卷，弘始十一年（公元409年）圆寂。在他因病辞世之前，

与众僧告别曰：……自以闇昧[，]谬充传译。凡所出经论三百余卷。唯十诵一部未及删烦。存其本旨[，]必无差失。愿凡所宣译[，]传流后世[，]咸共弘通。今于众前发诚实誓。若所传无谬者。当使焚身之后[，]舌不燋烂。……“卒于长安之后”即于逍遥园依外国法以火焚尸。薪灭形碎[，]唯舌不灰。（慧皎，1983：332—333）

这位通晓梵汉语言的大译师，虽然生前即以讲经、译经远近驰名，却依然是以火化后舌之存在来向世人印证其译文的忠实可靠。此神通、异事更强化了他的传奇性和译文的可信度，使他的译作更广为流传，历时近一千六百年。

吊诡的是，鸠摩罗什之所以留名至今，主要是因为他的译事。换言之，当年若舌头不存，依照他的说法则证明其“所传有谬”，其译文虽然未必不保，但恐难如后世般盛行；然而自千年后的今天观之，若非其译作存在，其事功早已渺逝，其名也未必普为人知，而舌头的故事恐更早已湮没无闻了。进言之，译者纵然扮演诸种角色，但译文却是他存在的证明（“我译故我在”“译在人在”），也证明了他的诸种角色。译者/舌人固不待以舌头来印证译作的忠实，但译作本身就成为他的最佳再现与“舌头”。
